
Where to go and what to see
Truro
With its late Victorian Cathedral and assorted shops and markets it is well worth visiting Cornwall’s county town. Truro is the site of the Royal Cornwall Museum and the best part is that entry is free!
Truro is 17 miles from the hotel.
Falmouth
Apart from the glorious beaches, spend time at the National Maritime Museum, or visit Pendennis Castle. Falmouth is only 12 miles from the hotel.
Gweek
Visit the famous seal sanctuary where you can meet the resident seals, sea lions and otters and learn about the important conservation work being carried out. Gweek is 3 miles from the hotel.
Flambards
A delight for children of all ages. As well as all the amusements and children’s play areas there are very interesting re-creations of a Victorian Village and Britain in the Blitz – only 1 mile from the hotel.
Goonhilly
Visit the world’s largest Earth Satellite Station before it disappears. Only 8 miles from the hotel.
Porthcurno Telegraph Museum
Visit the museum and see how groundbreaking news was spread around the world. Everything that you wanted to know about telecommunications but were afraid to ask. 18 miles from the hotel.
The Minack Theatre
This must be the most spectacular theatre in Gt Britain. Even if you don’t see a production it is an experience just sitting on the carved stone seats viewing the performance area against the stunning backdrop of Porthcurno Bay. 18 miles from the hotel.
Lands End
As well as the stunning scenery, Lands End boasts 20,000 squ ft of underground attractions. Land End is a place that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. 22 miles from the hotel.
Geevor Tin Mine
Do the underground tour and observe how tin is extracted from ore. Geevor is 25 miles from the hotel.
St Ives/ Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Gallery
St Ives has stunning beaches and a rich culture of art and sculpture. This is an ideal place to buy that original piece of artwork. St Ives is 15 miles from the hotel.
Paradise Park Wildlife Sanctuary
Tropical birds, exotic animals and farmyard friend plus play areas and daily events all in beautiful gardens. Definitely one for the little ones. Only 13 miles from the hotel.
Poldark Mine
No Ross’s and Demelza’s here! Just don your hard hat and go underground to experience what it would have been like to mine tin underground. There are separate routes for differing levels of agility. Not to be missed.
The Poldark Mine is 3 miles from the hotel.
Levant Mine and Beam Engine
Visit the only working steam powered beam engine in Cornwall. 20 miles from the hotel.
Exercise
Helston Sports Centre is less than a mile from the hotel. Here you can swim and use a whole range of fitness equipment.
In the locality of Helston there are golf courses at Mullion and Hayle. There are numerous opportunities for sailing and diving in the area. Walking the costal paths gives you spectacular views over the sea and countryside.
The Gardens of west Cornwall

- Bonython
- Trelissick
Are all within a short distance of the hotel. Trerice, the Eden Project and the Lost gardens of Heligan are further away but well worth a visit.
Having visited all these gardens I would be hard pressed to try and choose my favourite. Visit them all and see what you think.
The Coastline of West Cornwall
The Lizard Peninsula is well worth a visit. Kynance Cove is especially beautiful. St Michaels Mount is worth a visit. You can walk across to the castle at low tide. Penzance is rather quaint and it is from here that you can sail across to the Isles of Scilly on the Scillonian.

Helston
Whilst staying at the hotel walk down into the market town of Helston famed for its ancient ‘furry dance’ that attracts people from all over the world. Every year on May 8th the town’s residents gather together for this feast day in recognition of their patron saint St Michael. Wander down Coinagehall St to the gothic landmark that is the Grylls Memorial and don’t forget to visit Helston’s Folk Museum.
The Coinage Towns
Helston, Truro, Bodmin ,Liskeard and Lostwithiel are all ‘towns’ where heavy ingots of tin would have been brought and piled up high outside the coinage halls waiting to be assayed.
